CASE STUDY: MOUNT WOLF PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
Posted: July 2025
About the Client
Mount Wolf is a quaint borough located in York County, PA, and home to over 1,400 residents who love their community spaces. The local park is more than just a playground; it’s where elementary school children gather for lunch breaks, daycares bring their kids for outdoor activities, and families come together.
When playground equipment began to fail due to heavy use, Dan Schleig from the Parks and Recreation Department reached out to SWF Industrial for help.
The Problem
Two critical issues were compromising children’s safety at the park.
The walking bridge connecting the main playground structure had broken chains, which cut off access between sections.
The large metal slide also developed a dangerous 6-inch crack at the top that could catch children’s shoelaces.
Though caution tape marked both hazards, children often removed it to continue playing in these unsafe areas.
When SWF’s team assessed the situation, they recognized an opportunity to put their Character, Commitment, and Creativity into action. Rather than providing a standard quote for repairs, they decided to complete the entire project at no cost to support local families and children.
The Solution
The approach for this project combined technical precision with practical problem-solving.
It took Mount Wolf’s Public Works Department a few days to disassemble the damaged bridge into smaller parts, ready for transport to SWF’s fabrication shop for reuse. Using old school ingenuity, SWF designed replacement parts to repair the existing structure and ensure greater durability for years of play.
When it comes to the slide, they opted for a permanent solution by fabricating a custom stainless steel transition piece in their shop, precisely engineered to close the dangerous gap. On-site welding was performed to secure the new component directly to the slide deck plate, ensuring a smooth, safe surface that maintained the slide’s original design integrity.
The Result
Unlike SWF’s typical industrial projects, this wasn’t turnkey. It was a community initiative for their skilled team to use their expertise to solve problems for neighbors. The rapid turnaround time meant minimal disruption for park visitors and professional-grade repairs that would withstand years of enthusiastic play. While the Public Works Department is still in the process of adding all the finishing touches, we are proud to have helped them achieve their goals.
“Again, on behalf of the whole Borough, we thank you and SWF Industrial!” – Dan
SWF’s support helped the Mount Wolf community, giving local children a safe playground while positively impacting the community’s aesthetics.
As members of the nearby community, the team wanted their efforts to contribute to something bigger than profit. That desire speaks to the can-do spirit of SWF team members who help every project succeed, no matter the size.
